What sweetener should I use when making Switchel

Switchel can be made without a sweetener, but I find that my family likes it a lot better when I add in a sweetener. Especially at the beginning of our Traditional Food journey when we're used to sweeter things. There are a few different sweetener options that you can use. My preferred sweetener has always been honey, but let's go over the common whole food sweetener options:

Honey

Honey: Rich flavor, Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory, Helps with seasonal allergies when local.

Honey is a natural sweetener that is made from the nectar of flowers. It is high in sugars, and it has a rich flavor that makes it a popular choice for sweetening beverages and baked goods. Honey is also a good source of antioxidants, and it has anti-inflammatory properties.

When using honey as a sweetener, I prefer to use raw honey. Raw honey has not been processed, and it retains all of the nutrients and benefits of honey. You can find raw honey at your local health food store, or you can order it online. However local is always best.

Molasses

Molasses: High in minerals, Antioxidant, Deep flavor.

You can find raw sugar at your local health food store, or you can order it online.

When using raw sugar as a sweetener, I prefer to use organic raw sugar. This type of raw sugar is made from sugarcane that has been grown without the use of pesticides and herbicides.

Switchel (aka Haymakers Punch) Drink Recipe

Equipment

  • Quart Sized Mason Jar

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Fresh Grated Ginger or 1 tsp dried ginger
  • 1/4 cup Honey or molasses, maple, raw or brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup Warm Water
  • 3 tbsp Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp Sea Salt
  • 3 cups Juice of Choice apple, cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry are just a few examples.
  • Optional: up to 1/8 tsp Cayenne for extra energy

Instructions

  • Add your ginger, honey, and 1/2 cup of warm water in your quart mason jar and mix well.
  • (Make sure that your mixture isn't hot before moving on to the next step. You don't want to harm any of the good bacteria in your Apple Cider Vinegar.)
  • Add the Apple Cider Vinegar and Juice to the mason jar and mix.
  • Add in your salt and cayenne if you're using it. Mix well.
  • Serve over Ice or let it chill in the Fridge before serving.

  • If using fresh grated ginger you will have pulpy ginger in your drink. If you don't like this then after you let your Switchel mixture chill for a couple of hours in the Fridge you can strain out the ginger.
  • These ingredients are a general guideline, feel free to adjust the measurements as needed to your family's tastes preferences.
  • This also makes a great drink mixer! My favorite thing to mix it with is Malibu Rum. Commonly in the past this drink was mixed together with rum instead of juice.
