Dressing Vs Stuffing: What's the Difference?

I had this same question. After looking into I discovered that they are essentially the same thing. What differentiates them is that dressing is cooked separately in its own dish, while stuffing is cooked inside of a bird, typically turkey. In my family, we have always called this type of side dish stuffing, whether it was stuffed inside the turkey or not (and typically it wasn't).

I have always been a picky eater, and stuffing (or dressing) has never been my favorite. In fact, I usually avoid it when gatherings where it is served. “Traditional” stuffing/dressing made with bread just isn't for me.

My Grandma would make the only dressing that I would eat, and I wouldn't just tolerate it, I loved it! It was so different and simple and I felt like it would always complement the rest of the meal instead of trying to overpower the other food with outrageous flavor. What made her dressing different? Crackers, yup you read that right. My Grandma would make her dressing with crackers every time and I loved it!

Now that I'm older and I have my own family, I ONLY make this delicious Cracker dressing. No bread-based dressing is made in my house. My husband also has never been very fond of traditional stuffing, so he loved this recipe when I made it for him.

The ingredients needed for this recipe are so simple you may find that you already have most of them in your pantry.

My Grandma would always use Saltine Crackers for this recipe. Her measurements for the crackers are based on the box of Saltine Crackers. But even so, you could probably also use Ritz crackers or a store-brand cracker. I've even thought about making this recipe with Matzo instead of crackers, but I haven't done that yet.

  • Eggs
  • Onion
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Water
  • Milk
  • Butter

The Directions for Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving Dressing Recipe

Crunch up your crackers. Since I use Saltine Crackers, I crunch them up while they're still in the sleeves. This makes it easier to crunch up and less painful. Another good way to crunch your crackers up is by putting in into a bag and using a rolling pin to crush them.

Chop up your vegetables. How finely you chop them is up to your personal preference. I like to use a salad shooter to get them finely grated. I feel like this helps them mix in better. Make sure that when you're chopping up your vegetables that you keep the onion separate from the others.

Saute the chopped onions in butter over medium-high heat until they are carmalized.

Add the water and milk to the crushed-up crackers and mix them together.

Add the eggs to your mixture of crackers and combine well.

Mix in the vegetables.

Put the mixture into a greased casserole dish.

Cook at 350ºF for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Ingredients

  • 1 Box Saltine Crackers
  • 3-4 Eggs
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Celery Sticks
  • 2 Carrots
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 2 tbsp Butter for sautéing onion
